Adapting to Indirect Source Rules through Emissions Monitoring with Trapezoid Technologies
Trapezoid’s AI-powered software and hardware technology automates the collection of all required truck information to provide full ISR compliance, eliminate manual reporting, and minimize fees.
Recently implemented and currently proposed government regulations across the country mandate emissions reporting requirements and mitigation fees for warehouse’s trucking operations. For example, the South Coast Air Quality Monitoring District (AQMD) Warehouse Actions and Investments to Reduce Emissions (WAIRE) Program aims to reduce nitrogen oxide and diesel emissions associated with warehouses in California's Inland Empire, while the New York State Senate is also reviewing legislation which proposes “Indirect Source Rules” targeting warehousing operations in a similar manner.
Indirect Source Rules (ISR’s) aim to regulate and reduce emissions stemming from trucking and traffic operations at warehouses greater than a certain size. This requires mandated and regular reporting of truck arrivals and departures, truck specific dwell times, and type of truck, among various other requirements. This information is used to calculate the environmental impact of a specific warehouse operator who is then taxed in the form of a mitigation fee which is used by the local government to implement other green technologies like EV charging infrastructure.
Upon arrival and check-in at the gate, Trapezoid extracts all currently required fields (and more) through our computer vision and machine sensing hardware to be made available via API:
- Date and time of truck arrival
- Truck license plate number
- Truck Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Truck Department of Transportation Number (DOT)
- Truck Fuel Type (e.g., natural gas, electric, hydrogen)
- Trucking Company Name and Contact Information
- Driver Name and Contact Information
Once collected, this information is stored securely in the cloud for compliant record keeping. Per WAIRE regulations, records must be made available upon request and maintained for 7 years following submission. Below is a flow chart from the SCAQMD for determine if these regulations impact your operations:
In California, the enforcement and compliance with the regulation is being phased in based on the size of the warehousing operations, as shown below:
